Ahhh...

The second week of school is great. The routine is really coming together and no one is freaking out in the morning, well, no more than usual anyway. I've eased into a gentle schedule for the fall:
Mon: yoga
Tue: run (+ yoga if I'm up to it)
Wed: yoga
Thu: run (+ yoga if I'm up to it)
Fri: off (Mae Mama Day!)
Sat: ride (+ yoga if I'm up to it)
Sun: long run

My 8 mile run in the Newtons went well today. I've gradually built up the mileage on them and my only complaint is that the tops of my feet and my ankles really hurt at the end. I'm going to put my orthotics in on Thursday and see if that helps at all. My calves are fine now. Ahhh.

I rocked it in yoga on Monday, so last Thursday must have been a fluke (I felt sooo nauseous the whole time, which never happens to me in there, hot though it is). It was nice to ride there and back again, so I hope we have a lovely Indian summer so I can do it for a long time.

Back to school nights are this week and Sam's 7th bday party is on Saturday! He wants these cupcakes at school on Friday, the firecrackers for the boys and mice for the girls. Too cute!!!

Settling in...

The kids are back in school. My sprint is done; CF ride and 1/2 Marathon are on the horizon. It's nice being back in a routine. My sprint was a truly awesome experience. I was slower than HECK (9 full minutes slower than last year?!) but really enjoyed myself. The swim started out a little crazy. They had the first-timers in their own wave, so when my wave went off, everyone knew what they were doing. There was less swimming around near-drowning people and more being swum around, and I probably drank half the reservoir on the way to the first buoy because the water was so choppy. But somewhere around the halfway point I really started to enjoy it and and remembered again why I like triathlon. I enjoy doing all 3 of these things, in a non-competitive manner. More on that later. The bike ride started out ... not so good. I crashed. For some reason, they have us mount the bike on gravel, about 5 feet from good solid blacktop. I spun out on the gravel and really ripped up my right arm pretty well. My whole right side is bruised too, but it wasn't that painful so I was up quickly but had a race director person check my bike. The last thing I wanted was to leap back on and have there be something wrong that I didn't see. So I lost some time on the bike with all that drama, but the ride itself was good. I stayed between 19-23 most of the ride. The run was awesome. Slow as heck (32 minutes?! guess I only get sub-30 with track work!) but I didn't have that weird leg jello feeling and ran comfortably the whole time. It was great! Sylvie and I had lunch today and we both agreed to opt out of TriBabes next season. We'll stick with our swim classes with Anna Scott, our bike rides together (and spin classes in the winter) and our running. We can do this without having to get all serious about it. Boulder is such a weird place because 9 out of 10 athletes are really intense about it, and I need to remember what my priorities are (have fun! stay fit!) and stick with them!

I am always ready for new running shoes in August, and I try to get them early enough to wear them for the 1/2. I went for Newtons this time, on the advice of pretty much every runner and triathlete I know. I wore them for about 2 hours this afternoon and my calves hurt. But that is normal, as I adjust to the different foot strike. They are very loud shoes - no mellow white for me! I also got a cute running skirt (my first running skirt!). The weather today, cool and drizzly, was perfect for a recovery run. Since my watch broke, I'll go by the route and guess I did just over 3 miles - nothing big. Just to stretch the legs. I've been biking the kids to and from school each day and taking Ole on nice long walks. I'm going to the noon yoga class tomorrow and I hope my sore arm will be OK. It'll be a conversation starter, anyway!

The kids are all very tired but very enthusiastic about school. Apparently they are studying India in Ted's class and he was talking about a river that goes all around the world. Hmm. Sam is busy writing books (the newest edition: Baby Poops Up - The Final Flush) and Mae needs more work on her letter sounds (oops). Everyone is happy and tired. Life is good!

First Day of School!

All three kids started school today. Let me rephrase that: all three kids started school today, at the same school! I am beyond excited.Ted is a 3rd grader this year, in a mixed 2/3 class. I saw him playing with his old buddies (now 4th graders) at recess and his teacher reported that he was very mature and an excellent leader today. He did this in 1st grade too, really stepping up to show the younger ones how it's done.

Sam is in Elizabeth's class this year, all 1st graders. While he isn't with his best buddy Seamus (they are good friends, but not good "learning buddies" according to Sam) but he is with his other buddy Quinn and lots of really sweet boys from the other class that I grew to love while subbing. It is a very nice class and my first experience with 1st grade as all 1st grade without Ks in it! It is an exciting year. We got the thumbs up from Elizabeth and I saw him playing on the playground with his buddies as happy as a clam. He also enjoyed the school lunch today, and his own lunch. He is very tired!

And my baby is in Kindergarten! Mae stayed full day today, eating hot lunch and doing enrichment. She loved it and apparently spoke up whenever she needed anything. She grew up so much this summer and is so excited to be a big kid. We all rode our bikes this morning too, a new and exciting bonus to living in Boulder! More as next week unfolds, but a great 1st day of school! Fridays are always half days for the big kids and no school for the Ks, so tomorrow will be mellow. Hooray!

Breaking the Tape

Ted, busting it home at the Tri last week. He got in just ahead of the 1st and 2nd place winners of the girl's division. He ranked 13 out of 30 in his division (8 year old boys) (5th in the swim!). I like how they let the kids break the tape like in the IronMan. ;-)

Mae's Birthday

Busy weekend!

Mae's birthday was on Thursday. We went to Build-A-Bear and had Chinese noodles for dinner. We ended up playing tennis and lobbing a ball into the pool, which led to swimming in underwear for the kids. Much fun was had, but it was a late night, so we had the DQ ice cream cake on Friday morning for breakfast.

Her party was Saturday at the pool. She invited 5 little friends and their families and we had a mellow time, soaking up the sun and catching up. It was a great day! Happy 5th birthday, Mae Mae!!
